What a Way to Close Out a Season!

Karen Faris, poet, writer, novelist and creative collaborator closed the 2016-17 “Words on the Verge” Reading Series at A Different Path Gallery in Brockport, NY on Friday evening, June 16th.   Taking a creative sojourn and different path from what she is used to as far as writing endeavors, Faris collaborated with artist and A Different Path gallery owner, Katherine Weston.  Weston created a visually rich wonderland of clay sculptures to weave the tale of an enchanting, wise and erudite grand bunny (G.B.) and others that existed in a marvelous world of whimsical fantasy and captivating life lessons.

Karen’s presentation, “Bunnies in Wonderland,” enabled her to read from her story inspired by and complementary to Katherine’s sculptures.  The gallery was transformed into the enchanting environment, world, space, and ambiance that enabled the sculptures to easily transition to the real life imaginary creatures that delighted adults and children as they explored the sculptures and storyboards after Karen introduced the characters and story line during the first phase of her reading.

Her well-delivered and passionate words about the sculptures’ adventures before and then after the audience actually saw the pieces, made smiles that much wider and bigger.  Karen’s son, Duncan provided witty, very short musical interludes on trombone during the reading, and her husband Mark was also a witness to a magical evening of words as he sat mesmerized in the same manner as other guests in the packed, standing room only seating section of the gallery.

The prolific Karen Faris is the author of Grumbles the Novel, and her work has appeared in aaduna, Empty Sink Publishing, rewritingmarysue.com, and she is a contributor to the book-design journal, Spine.  Ms. Faris shares that she is currently shopping her climate change saga “Winds of Change,” her women’s fiction novel, “Moira” while also putting final touches on a time travel novel.  Oh, silly me, I almost left out that Karen is also at work on a book of poetry.

A free public event, Verge readings provide complimentary savory cheeses, artisan crackers, assorted wine, water, great ambiance and even dessert during intermission (and after the readings if there is anything still left!)  The series is superbly hosted by Christine Green, a noted local/regional poet, writer and special features newspaper columnist with support from her family, friends and local business sponsors.  And the graciousness and serenity of A Different Path Gallery and its owner enhances this reading experience to make each session a very worthwhile evening out.
