The First Sunday. The Last Sunday.
Today, Sunday, January 7, 2018 is the first Sunday of a new year. A different Sunday had the distinction of being the final day of last year. Sunday…an eve, and then a first day…a remembrance and a harbinger of things to come. Sunday as the first day of the week enables us to bring our weekend to a peaceful and relaxed conclusion. The opportunity to chart what we need to do in the coming week. Sundays are defined by hope, expectation, pleasantries, cordiality, friendship, exploration, and discovery. So on this first Sunday of a new year, we hope local communities, nations, and regions of the world can take a profound step to make the lives of its citizens significantly better in at least one area. To resolve regional or global differences that keep some of us on the brink of possible war and ongoing political conflict. To respect differences in people even if you are not able or willing to embrace those differences in a community or national agenda.
Sunday…a
day for reflection…for deliverance…for getting things ready for what is to
come.
Sunday
is the best day to present an excerpt from the creative and imaginative mind of
Oliver
Lodge,
a previous aaduna contributor, 2017 Pushcart Prize nominee, and prolific fiction
writer. Here is an excerpt from his
“Autopilot” a feature in the forthcoming winter 2017-18 issue.
I
just worked
for thirty-six hours straight. No break.
No sleep. Triple vision switching to quadruple vision on my way home. Veering
into the other lane. Almost colliding with the other vehicles head-on. If only
the morning commuters knew who they were driving against. The front axle is
loose. It’s vibrating through the bottoms of my feet. The brake pads are
wearing away. Metal grinding against metal underneath me. Dozing off. Nodding
off. Blink. Stay in the lane. Carbon dioxide. Gasoline fumes. My head is
killing me and I'm almost out of pills. I'm stuck on the fast track and there
ain't no coming off.

Sunday, January 7th…this
day of critical, season defining NFL football games. This Sunday, an evening that will focus on what was a routine, annual celebrity-driven award show that will now further
position the dynamic issue of sexual abuse and harassment towards women. This Sunday, a time for whatever activities define us as individuals, and those we care for, and love. I guess we do understand diversity. We just have to transition that understanding
to other just as meaningful social human situations.
WATCH for aaduna's winter issue LAUNCHING SOON!
