Genesis moving towards Being…

There is always a beginning in the natural order of things and even if one was to investigate the nuances of evolution, there are stages. There is a learning curve. There is nurturing and mentoring. There are experiences that construct and guide the processes of moving from point A to point B. What is exciting to see and bear witness to is the transformation from point one to beyond. What is exciting is to be an observer in that ever-changing landscape of individual development where you see how a person navigates an intuitive process and goes from a seed to…

A few years ago, an ‘aspiring poet attended one of the aaduna gala fundraiser with folks who invited and encouraged her to attend. Now, it is not evident whether or not there was an already planted seed just waiting to sprout or a barren landscape, devoid of growth that would require planting a seed.  What is now known is that this person will read her work to an audience. Her poetic work will soon be published. So, understand this singular understanding.

The seed sprouted and {with care and support from others} will embolden this person to move toward being an established poet. And interestingly, another creative person will bring unique perspectives to those facets of experiences and intellectual stimulation that underpins who we are as a community.

Chantel Frazier is an emerging African American poet, born and raised in Syracuse, New York. After her high school graduation in 2013, she enrolled at Onondaga Community College, SUNY  where she completed courses in English, public speaking, general psychology, and American sign language. In 2014, she left college to join the workforce as a certified nurse’s aide to support her family. Growing up on Syracuse's south side, Chantel faced personal struggles as well as witnessing her peers' challenges. Although her peers had come from different backgrounds and circumstances, they were seen the same by many. She started to understand the public’s view of her community. In her mind, the public’s negative attitudes were rooted in, and blanketed by a persistent negative veil that could only be lifted by someone willing to speak from an unbiased point of view.

Discovering this “wisdom” in her early twenties, Chantel embraced the world around her; gathered personal stories articulated by her peers, as well as from her immediate family and started to construct her poetic voice. With this creative foundation, she complemented others’ experiences with her own poetic explanation of life during and after high school. Ms. Frazier sheds light on the societal misconceptions surrounding the teenage upbringing of African American students, washing away the idea of a cyclical bruised community never waking up to their calling of healing themselves…. Frazier’s poetry has found a home and her work will debut in the fall/winter 2022 issue of aaduna.
