The Complexities of Creativity

Many readers may know a creative individual and even embrace that person as a friend or easily an associate, a colleague. And many creatives are singular in their pursuit: dance, music, art, theater, writing etc. And several creatives develop an complementary artistic interest that supplements if not complements their primary artistic interest. And then there is that smaller cohort of creatives whose imaginative reach impacts several fields; those folks naturally evolve into a whirlwind of artistic endeavors.

Karen Faris (photo provided)

Karen Faris is one of those whirlwinds. With a quiet demeanor and inquisitive mind, she is hard to pigeonhole. At one point, she can be seen as a poet, then writer, then fabric artist, then papermaker, then photographer, then whatever her creative mind latches on to for her to quelch her insatiable creative mind. So, this description may not necessarily serve her well; but you can meet and greet her at the aaduna gala fundraiser on Thursday, October 27 at Cayuga Museum’s Carriage House Theater in Auburn, NY starting at 6 PM. So…

Creative Faris works across the artistic spectrum melding visual and written work into ensembles of art and spectacle. In her words, {Faris} “does not believe retelling the old stories from the old perspectives does anything but give us the world we already have, and, god knows, that hasn't worked out so well.” She would like to see a compassionate, fairer planet where more than the pursuit of money is rewarded. That alone may explain her penchant for poetry. In August 2022, she read her work at Macedon, a first after a 2–3-year hiatus due to the pandemic and lack of in-person readings and venues. She has presented a literary/visual art piece titled “Aliens Like Us” at the 2019 Rochester Fringe Festival. Her publications include “Florine! Oh Florine!” a 2021chapbook of words and art to coincide with the opening of her art show; “The Death of Compassion,” a poetry chapbook, published jointly with aaduna in 2020. Other publications include "Grumbles the Novel," a chapbook, “A Few Poems,” “Before There Was Yonder,” illustrated by Katherine Weston and “Strings of Motherhood,” a literary art book. Journal publications include work in aaduna, descant, great weather for media, Golden Walkman Literary Journal and rundelmania.

A dynamic and prolific speaker, Faris has read at several New York State venues most notably “Words on the Verge” in Brockport, the open mic sessions at “word, revisited” in Auburn, Books, Etc. in Macedon, PH Gallery+Studio in Troy, NY and at Rochester Spoken Word with both those readings in July 2018. A year later, in the summer of 2019, Faris exhibited her artwork at the Cayuga Museum as part of the Museum’s CNY Emerging Artists series She was the featured speaker at “word, revisited” in Auburn on October 11, 2018, and participated in “NOT NORMAL: Art in the Age of Trump” also in that October in Syracuse. She has exhibited at Albany Gallery Members and Friends July 2018 show in collaboration with photographer Pilar Arthur-Snead. Her visual art has also been displayed in The Link Gallery at Rochester City Hall as part of the Artist Breakfast Group Show in December 2017. A graduate of the NYFA Boot Camp: Artist as Entrepreneur, Ms. Faris continues to be based in Rochester, NY.
