Over the river and through the woods…

If you are of a certain age, you probably recall singing or screaming this song at school assemblies, or joyfully playing with childhood friends, or maybe even on a pub crawl with a bunch of folks on a wintry day.  Drifting snow, images of a sleigh, the horse who knew the way, grandma and grandfather, and the torrid blowing wind that “stings the toes And bites the nose….”

We have blogged about the power of words and how poets and writers are channel and transform words into sentences and stanza and paragraphs to create memories and inspire more profound levels of understanding about situations and people.

On this Thursday, the 4th day of a new year, we are share the work of Marwa Fichera and Imani “Clio” Lang.

Fichera brings home to aaduna two poems, “. training” and “. mother’s wisdom.”

Here is a snippet from “. training”

as a child
I was told that
being born female,
one day I would become
a woman.

a black woman.

Lang also will present two poems in the forthcoming issue, A Dream, A Garden” and “Aborted.”
Here is the opening to “A Dream, A Garden:”
Every morning,
I curl my hair and plan to take over the world, yet I’m stuck in your imagery, your paint and your pearls so you could win me over like oil burning crayons
Every morning,
I plan to save these children yet when you yell at me I feel like a child-broken and crying out for peace
