“Avenues” explore poetry on this Wednesday
There are times when
brevity is poignant, memorable, and define the human complexities. Fred Chandler’s
poem serves those purposes.
Knotted Truce
When the stomach was burning
But the rotting meat of soldiers
Sending the carnivorous eaters
Into a vertiginous of fitful states
The meal was set upon despair
Upon long ago abandoned land
Only pale hands greet the dawn
Many inners retch out sanctuary
As a soul passes by only to help

At Beyond Baroque in Venice, Fred has been reading his poetry on
stage for audiences throughout the decade. Two spoken
word albums later, Fred Speaks Volume 1 and Fred
Speaks Volume 2 – From Beyond Baroque—recorded by Bruce Botnick—his writing
comes alive in an audial form available both as a CD and digitally on
iTunes. Composed by Aaron Zigman, each poem on Fred's album has an
original score. Fred has also collaborated with Bruce on a poster, “Wind
in her Hair” that was inspired by a dream Jim Morrison once had.
In Fred’s worldwide travels, he never fails to
produce incisive poems. His writing grapples with existential
themes, love and death, while retaining a voice that has the timbre of
experience echoing through the chambers of his readers’ hearts.
